Coincidentally two guides came out today written by cycling organisations aiming to provide guidance for cycling infrastructure. Sound similar, but they couldn’t be more different.

Specific cycle provision. We welcome that the station development mentions cycling and walking throughout the documents and that the survey documents recognise that the cycle network in Ely is piecemeal and often sub-standard to non-existant. We spoke at two Neighbourhood Panel meetings last week. One of the points we made was that we want to see changes that allow people to cycle. Note the emphasis there. We’re not campaigning to encourage, convince or force more people to cycle. We campaigning for changes that allow them to cycle.

Starting from February we’re planning to organise bi-monthly, cycling related talks. We hope they will be a chance to hear about a range of cycling related topics and afterwards to mingle, chat and have a drink. Ely Cycling Club are running a new club ride on Saturdays, 9am from Witchford Village College which is slower and shorter than their Sunday rides and more suitable for those new to riding in a group. Keep an eye on their Facebook page for updates: https://www.facebook.com/groups/268584086532266/

We’re really pleased that the ban on cycling along the riverside in Ely is being lifted. This is one of the simple improvements we’ve been campaigning for and it’s great to see it come to fruition.
