Local MP refuses to back call for better justice for road accident victims

We recently posted a piece about the campaign for better justice for victims of road accidents. The campaign is being organised by British Cycling and promoted in Parliament in an EDM proposed by the MP for Cambridge, Julian Huppert. We asked people to contact our MP Jim Paice and ask him to sign the EDM. Some of our members took the time to do that and have now received letters back.

Did you see us at the station handing out cards?

Were you one of the 250 commuters we gave a card to at the station on Tuesday morning? If so then why not join the campaign?

We’re campaigning to improve cycling infrastructure and promote cycling in and around Ely. To do that we need to get the councils to take on board the needs of cyclists. The more members we have the more the councils will listen to us.

You can join online – it’s easy! Just go to the join page here or you can join in person at our meetings. The next meeting is our AGM on the 20th September. Why not come along?

Cambridge MP wants justice for victims of road accidents

Julian Huppert the MP for Cambridge has sponsored an Early Day Motion (EDM 407) to ask for a review of the justice system that relates to victims of road accidents. There are numerous examples of cyclist and pedestrians being killed or seriously injured by motorists who then get little more than a slap on the wrist. The EDM aims to bring this issue to the attention of the government and asks for a comprehensive review of the situation. We think our MP Jim Paice should support this review by signing the EDM.

Riding into Ely from Witchford as a family

Start of shared use path in WitchfordWe had visitors this weekend and decided to cycle into Ely with them this Sunday. It’s a relatively well served route (for the UK) with a wide shared use path along the busy A142. I do the journey regularly and as an experienced adult cyclists it’s an easy ride. Sunday was a little different as there were 13 of us cycling in; 5 adults, 1 teenager and 7 primary school age children.

Montpellier or Bust – A 1,000km Charity Cycle Challenge

One of our members is cycling the length of France for charity in September, here’s his take on it.

Andy P with bikeSo, another day, another charity cycle! It seems that almost every week we hear or read about someone doing a charity run, ride, swim or walk. Only last week the local Ely paper even featured a lady on the front page preparing to undergo a charity head shave, while inside was another story of a gentleman taking on a cycle challenge of his own, all in aid of good causes.

Family bike ride Sunday 26 August

We did another family bike ride today. I wasn’t too optimistic about the weather but it held well. We had two new comers, a father and his daughter from Stretham , the daughter was about 5 and riding her bike without stabilisers but in need of opportunities like this to gain familiarity and get some practice.

Family bike ride on Sunday 29th July.

We had sunshine for the first few hours and got as far as Cam Drive before being driven home by a thunderstorm and rain. We picnicked in the play park behind Brook Grove in the sun. It was only on the last bit coming round and back to the road at Downham Road that we could see a wall of rain and thunder moving towards us from Little Downham.
