20’s Plenty for the Ely Standard

I met the editor of the Ely Standard yesterday (Oct 24th). He offered to meet with the cyclists of Ely after their front page article last week got so much stick and didn’t want to waste the opportunity.

We don’t condone cycling on the pavements but do dislike negative press when for the most part cyclists are part of the solution, not the problem.

I thought rather than going in on the defensive I would tell him all about our attempt to solve some of the problems; 20’s Plenty.

Our letter to the Ely Standard

To round off our posts about the ant-social cyclists article on the front page of the Ely Standard here’s the letter we sent in response.

Dear Sirs,

We at the Ely Cycling Campaign are saddened to hear that complaints about anti-social cycling in Ely are on the rise. We don’t condone any type of illegal cycling and we’d be happy to liaise with Inspector Paul Ormerod to offer our support in helping to educate local cyclists about the rules of the road.Continue reading “Our letter to the Ely Standard”

It should be about tackling the behaviour.

This is the second in a series of posts relating the the Ely Standard front page article about “anti-social cyclists” (here is the first Pedestrians vs Cyclists is a different level of conflict to Cyclists vs Cars).

What should have been highlighted is the behaviour and not the group. The Ely Standard’s headline should have said “anti-social cycling” not “anti-social cyclists“. It’s a small but very important difference.

Pedestrians vs Cyclists is a different level of conflict to Cyclists vs Cars

The Ely Standard ran a big front page splash this week about “anti-social cyclists”. This is the first of a series of posts we’re going to write addressing some of the more complex issues surrounding that simplistic phrase.

First of all it needs some perspective. What the Ely Standard were covering was cyclist riding on the pavement. In the same edition the “Views from Fens” column said ‘Pedestrians shouldn’t be expected to dodge cyclists’. When looked at in isolation this looks obvious but taken in a wider context it gets more complicated.

Suggest improvements to the cycling provision around Ely

We’ve set up a page to allow you to suggest minor changes to improve the cycling provision in and around Ely. Things like a dropped kerb that’s needed, a barrier that needs to be removed or a place where additional cycle parking would be useful.

Council quietly publishes plans for the Station Gateway with no cycling provision

East Cambridgeshire District Council have been drawing up plans for the ‘Station Gateway’ redesign but they’re not publicising them very much. They were unearthed by one of our members after seeing them at the Octagon Retail Park exhibition where they were available to see, if you asked the right person. They weren’t on the display boards.

You can read the proposals here http://www.eastcambs.gov.uk/meetings/development-transport-committee-06092012 contained in 8 separate pdfs of consultation drawings.
