Bring the Tour Series to Ely?

As some of you may know there is currently a series of cycle race events going on around the country called the Tour Series.

These are city / town centre races involving some of the biggest names in UK national cycling, including Olympic Champions like Ed Clancy. The races happen in the early evening and bring in large crowds (see photo). They are also broadcast on TV.

We’ve been contacted via Twitter suggesting that it would be good if the Tour Series came to Ely. Ely city centre could certainly provide an excellent circuit and the high profile of the event would certainly boost cycling in the area.

So should we be trying to bring the Tour Series to Ely?

UPDATE:

There is now a Shape Your Place post about this as well – http://ely.shapeyourplace.org/2013/06/07/bring-the-tour-to-ely/

Here’s Kevin’s suggested route (see comments)

  1. I would absolutely love to see the tour series make it to Ely, looking at the towns and cities that have already featured, Ely would sit in nicely with the mix of modern city centers and historic routes.

  2. Funny, I was thinking this the other day while watching it. A circuit of High Street, Gallery, Back Hill, Broad Street, Fore Hill back to High Street is probably the obvious one. It’s 1.6km, takes in the Cathedral on a narrow winding section, and includes a climb and a descent. Would you go clockwise or anticlockwise…?

  3. I’d love to see this, especially if it included the ladies tour (they don’t do all the events). The key is getting funding from local business and the council- events like this go where they are paid to go…
